State authorities have confirmed multiple fatalities resulting from sudden debris flows and house collapses, while rescue teams, district administrations, and disaster response forces scramble to evacuate stranded residents and set up emergency relief camps.

The high-range districts of Idukki and Kottayam bore the brunt of the extreme weather, where sudden landslips flattened homes and trapped residents in the early hours. In Idukki’s Kudayathoor and Vagamon regions, debris flows resulted in tragic casualties and widespread property damage, leaving local rescue personnel struggling against heavy weather to clear blocked mountain passes. Meanwhile, in Kottayam’s Poonjar area, rising mud and swollen streams inundated low-lying settlements, forcing district officials to deploy dinghy boats and establish immediate relief centers to shelter displaced families.

The sudden surge in reservoir inflows has compelled authorities to open the floodgates of several minor and major dams including Pambla, Kallarkutty, and Malankara to manage water levels safely. Downstream communities along riverbanks have been placed on high alert, with officials urging residents to relocate immediately to designated safe zones.

In response to the escalating crisis, state leadership has stepped up disaster coordination, with senior officials reviewing ground-level preparedness and directing the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and police units to assist in vulnerable zones. The IMD has warned that extremely heavy rainfall and strong surface winds could persist across the region over the coming days, keeping several northern and central districts under red and orange alerts.
