New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has voiced strong opposition to the upcoming ‘Universal Oneness’ gathering featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat. Scheduled to take place on August 29 at Madison Square Garden, the event is part of a multi-nation tour celebrating the Sangh’s centenary year.

Addressing a press conference in New York, Mayor Mamdani highlighted his background as an Indian-American while opposing the event. He emphasized that he grew up with a vision of India as a pluralistic, secular republic that embraces individuals regardless of background. Stating that he finds himself in deep opposition to any movement built on an exclusionary national vision, Mamdani reiterated that such ideologies stand contrary to the inclusive values of New York City.

Despite expressing strong personal and official disapproval, Mayor Mamdani noted that the city administration likely lacks legal jurisdiction to intervene directly. He explained that municipal authorities generally do not possess the power to unilaterally cancel privately hosted events at private venues. Consequently, the decision regarding the use of the iconic arena remains with the venue management rather than City Hall.

The event has sparked significant debate across the local Indian diaspora and civil rights groups. Outside New York City Hall, a coalition of organizations including Hindus for Human Rights and the Indian American Muslim Council held press briefings urging Madison Square Garden to revoke the booking. Conversely, event host AHEAD Forum defended the gathering, asserting that the program centers on the global theme of mutual harmony and universal brotherhood.
