Oshiwara Maternity Hospital Jogeshwari: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inaugurated the newly constructed Oshiwara Maternity Hospital at Captain Samant Marg, Jogeshwari (West), strengthening healthcare services for pregnant women and newborns in Mumbai’s western suburbs. The hospital was officially inaugurated by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and became operational immediately after the ceremony, meaning residents in the area now have access to the facility’s services without any transitional delay. Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Tawde described the hospital as “more than just a building—it is a commitment to safe motherhood and a healthier future for newborns.” She emphasized that timely access to quality maternal healthcare can significantly reduce childbirth-related risks and improve health outcomes for both mothers and infants, framing the new facility as a direct civic investment in public health rather than simply an infrastructure upgrade.

The new facility has been constructed on an amenity plot after the previous hospital building was declared unsafe due to its deteriorating condition. During the reconstruction period, medical services that would otherwise have been offered at the original site were temporarily shifted to Topiwala Maternity Hospital, ensuring continuity of care for the area’s residents even while the new building was being built. The newly constructed Ground + 3-storey facility has a total capacity of 50 beds, distributed across three key departments: 34 beds for Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 10 beds for Paediatrics, and 6 beds in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), the last of which is specifically designed for newborns requiring closer medical monitoring immediately after birth. The hospital is equipped with modern operation theatres, along with both OPD (Outpatient) and IPD (Inpatient) services, and has been fitted with advanced medical equipment intended to support both routine and complicated deliveries.

The Mayor said the new facility will directly benefit thousands of residents from Jogeshwari (West), Adarsh Nagar, Behram Baug, Gautam Nagar, Shastri Nagar, and nearby areas by providing advanced maternity and neonatal services closer to their homes, reducing the need for families to travel long distances for maternal care. She added that the hospital would also help ease the patient load on larger civic hospitals across Mumbai, a factor that could improve service quality and reduce wait times at those larger institutions as well. The hospital’s scope of services is broad, covering obstetrics and gynaecology, both normal and high-risk deliveries, antenatal and postnatal care, neonatal care, paediatric services, family planning, immunisation, and maternal and child health counselling — effectively positioning it as a full-cycle maternal and newborn care centre rather than a facility limited to delivery services alone. A dedicated team comprising a Senior Medical Officer, two Gynaecologists, one Paediatrician, and trained nursing staff will provide round-the-clock healthcare services, ensuring that emergency and time-sensitive cases can be attended to at any hour.

The inauguration ceremony saw a wide turnout of civic and political representation, reflecting the significance attached to the project. Those present included MLA Haroon Khan, Public Health Committee Chairman Harish Bhandirge, Corporator Rupesh Sawarkar, Corporator Vitthal Bandhire, Corporator Sudha Singh, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr. Bhagyashree Kapase, Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) Sharad Ughade, Executive Health Officer Dr. Daksha Shah, P North Ward Assistant Commissioner Kundan Valvi, and K West Ward Assistant Commissioner Chakrapani Alle, alongside senior civic officials, doctors, nurses, and local residents who had gathered to witness the opening. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the unveiling of the foundation plaque, the dignitaries toured the hospital premises and reviewed its medical facilities firsthand before the hospital was officially opened to the public, marking the formal handover of the project from construction to active civic use.
