This directive follows a sharp political controversy sparked by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who publicly claimed that donations amounting to Rs 18 crore are systematically siphoned off from the shrine every year. While the state government prepares to evaluate the findings to decide its next course of action, the temple leadership has firmly defended its transparency, emphasizing that internal measures and police complaints were initiated long before the recent allegations surfaced.

Responding to the mounting pressure, temple representatives clarified that the state department’s inquiry aligns with an independent request submitted by the trust administration back in May for a complete audit of all incoming donations. Rejecting claims that trustees had addressed a formal grievance letter regarding the massive deficit to leadership figures, trust officials underscored that they were the first to flag financial discrepancies. Trust President Sada Sarvankar noted that he personally approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to deploy specialized oversight after suspecting irregularities in the collection boxes.
