Siddhivinayak Temple - Maharashtra Law and Judiciary Department Seeks Report From Siddhivinayak Temple Trust Over Alleged Donation Embezzlement

Siddhivinayak Temple – The Maharashtra Law and Judiciary Department has officially requested a comprehensive financial report from the administrative board of Mumbai’s iconic Shree Siddhivinayak Temple Trust. This directive follows a sharp political controversy sparked by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who publicly claimed that donations amounting to Rs 18 crore are systematically siphoned off from the shrine every year. While the state government prepares to evaluate the findings to decide its next course of action, the temple leadership has firmly defended its transparency, emphasizing that internal measures and police complaints were initiated long before the recent allegations surfaced.

Siddhivinayak Temple – Trust’s Stance and Prior  Audit Requests

Responding to the mounting pressure, temple representatives clarified that the state department’s inquiry aligns with an independent request submitted by the trust administration back in May for a complete audit of all incoming donations. Rejecting claims that trustees had addressed a formal grievance letter regarding the massive deficit to leadership figures, trust officials underscored that they were the first to flag financial discrepancies. Trust President Sada Sarvankar noted that he personally approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to deploy specialized oversight after suspecting irregularities in the collection boxes.

The financial discrepancies first came to light on March 20, when authorities noticed cash missing during routine checks, triggering an initial police complaint. Subsequent analysis of internal CCTV footage revealed individuals repeatedly extracting currency notes from smaller donation boxes over a span of several days. This breakthrough led law enforcement to arrest a temple employee, Rajendra Pendurkar, which ultimately snowballed into the detention of nine total accused individuals. Although a chargesheet has been filed and the suspects are currently out on bail, the probe has intensified political friction across local circles.

Siddhivinayak Temple – Political Crossfire and Escalating Debates

The unfolding controversy has quickly transformed into a major flashpoint between rival regional parties. While opposition figures use the incident to question administrative accountability at major religious institutions, trust leadership has countered by alleging that the arrested individuals hold political affiliations with opposition factions. As the Law and Judiciary Department awaits the formal submission of the detailed financial assessment, security and auditing protocols at the high-profile temple are facing heightened public and governmental scrutiny.
