SCLR Extension – A vital 1.4-kilometer extension of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) directly to key arterial routes, has been lying fully completed for nearly two months. Despite passing all technical safety inspections and structural checks, the multi-crore elevated carriageway remains completely barricaded off from motorists due to the absence of a formal inauguration date by political leaders.

SCLR Extension – Political Optics Delay Relief at Infamous Bottleneck

The elevated connector was designed specifically to eliminate gridlock at Kalanagar Junction one of Mumbai’s most congested traffic hubs linking the Western Express Highway, BKC, and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. However, local traffic police and commuters express growing frustration as thousands of drivers continue to spend 40 to 45 minutes stuck in monsoon traffic jams while a functional, taxpayer-funded bridge sits completely empty behind temporary barriers.

SCLR Extension –  Mounting Public Backlash and Political Criticism

Civic activists and opposition leaders have sharply criticized the delay, describing it as an unwarranted hold-up where public utility is sacrificed for political publicity. Critics argue that completed municipal infrastructure should open immediately upon technical clearance rather than waiting for VIP availability. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated that minor finishing works are being wrapped up and that an official opening is slated for the coming week.

SCLR Extension –  Seamless Signal-Free Travel for Suburban CommutersOnce opened to traffic, the elevated flyover will function as the missing link in the broader SCLR corridor, offering a seamless, signal-free transition between the Eastern and Western Express Highways via BKC. Daily commuters from eastern suburbs such as Kurla and Chembur stand to save significant travel time, bypassing congested stretches around Kalina and reducing overall pressure across Bandra East.
