Mumbai on Red alert – Heavy Downpour Batters Mumbai, Triggering Multiple Alerts
Mumbai and its surrounding regions woke up to another spell of intense rainfall on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar. The warning highlights the risk of extremely heavy showers at isolated places, accompanied by gusty winds, causing significant waterlogging in low-lying areas and major disruptions to daily life.
Mumbai on Red alert – Widespread Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions
Several key locations including Dadar, Parel, Worli, Goregaon, Andheri, and areas in Navi Mumbai like Sanpada reported severe waterlogging. Commuters faced long delays on the Western Express Highway (WEH) and Eastern Express Highway (EEH), with vehicles stranded in flooded underpasses. Local train services also experienced brief interruptions due to water on tracks at stations like Dadar. A large tree fall near Churchgate Station damaged multiple vehicles, though no casualties were reported.
Mumbai on Red alert – Rainfall Records and Administrative Response
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded exceptionally high rainfall in the last 24 hours, with several wards receiving over 200 mm. Eastern suburbs saw the highest average at around 189 mm. Authorities have urged caution as a high tide of 4.27 metres is expected in the afternoon. In response to recent incidents, Thane Mayor has ordered a comprehensive safety survey of hazardous trees across the city. Schools in certain areas remain closed as a precautionary measure.
