A major accident was reported in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Wednesday after a three-storey administrative building collapsed inside a waste management facility in the Moshi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad. Initial reports indicate that heavy monsoon rain caused a large mound of legacy waste to become unstable and slide onto the building, bringing down the structure. Authorities fear that around 15 to 16 people may have been inside the building at the time of the incident. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade personnel, police, ambulances and civic officials, rushed to the spot and launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation.
Heavy Rain Believed to Have Triggered Collapse
According to officials, the collapsed structure served as the administrative office of a private company operating at the waste processing site on behalf of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Preliminary findings suggest that continuous rainfall weakened the massive garbage mound located beside the building. The loosened waste then slid onto the structure, causing it to collapse within seconds. Authorities have stated that the exact cause will be confirmed after a detailed technical investigation.
Rescue Teams Continue Search for Trapped Workers
Emergency response teams immediately cordoned off the area and began removing debris using heavy machinery while rescue personnel searched for survivors. Ambulances have been stationed at the site to transport rescued victims to nearby hospitals. Officials have not yet released a confirmed casualty figure, as the operation remains ongoing and the exact number of people trapped is still being verified.
