FDA Crackdown Mumbai Elite Clubs: Behind the polished dining halls, premium memberships and elite reputation, Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it found a very different reality inside the kitchens of some of Mumbai’s most well-known clubs. In one of the city’s biggest food safety enforcement drives, the Maharashtra FDA, under the leadership of Commissioner Tukaram Munde, carried out surprise inspections at seven prominent clubs, gymkhanas and restaurants across Mumbai on July 27, 2026. Inspectors reported filthy food preparation areas, pest activity, spider webs, poor hygiene, improper food storage, lack of segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, missing records and multiple violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The crackdown resulted in five food licences being suspended with immediate effect, one Stop Business Notice, and one Improvement Notice, sending a strong message that no establishment is too influential to escape food safety laws.

Known for his strict administrative style, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Munde has once again demonstrated a zero-tolerance approach towards public health violations. Officials said the special inspection drive was conducted under Munde’s directions to ensure food served to consumers meets mandatory safety standards. The action signals that even Mumbai’s most prestigious clubs will face strict consequences if they compromise food safety.

The Cricket Club of India (CCI), one of India’s most iconic sporting institutions, landed in trouble after inspectors found multiple serious violations, including no proper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation, heavy dust accumulation and spider webs, stagnant water inside refrigerators, rotten and expired food items, improper food labelling, failure to follow FIFO/FEFO inventory practices, and poor housekeeping. The FDA immediately suspended the club’s food licence.

MIG Cricket Club, Bandra East produced one of the most serious violations of the entire drive. According to the FDA, catering services were allegedly being operated without a valid FSSAI licence, alongside unhygienic surroundings, pest infestation, improper storage of food, missing health records and unauthorised structural changes. The food licence was suspended with immediate effect.

The Willingdon Sports Club inspection observed poor kitchen hygiene, drainage issues, damaged infrastructure, inadequate pest control, outdated food safety records and failure to comply with FIFO/FEFO food storage protocols, resulting in immediate licence suspension.

The strongest action of the drive was taken against Goregaon Sports Club, Malad West, where the FDA issued a Stop Business Notice after detecting serious violations of food safety regulations. The order effectively directs the establishment to stop its food business until compliance requirements are met. The latest FDA crackdown on Mumbai’s elite clubs highlights an important reality: premium branding and exclusive memberships do not guarantee safe kitchens. Food safety experts believe the crackdown will push restaurants, clubs and hospitality businesses across Mumbai to strengthen hygiene practices, improve documentation and strictly follow FSSAI norms. With Commissioner Tukaram Munde leading the enforcement drive, industry insiders expect more surprise inspections in the coming weeks.
