Trump Generic Drug Tariffs US President Donald Trump has unveiled a phased tariff policy targeting imported generic medicines, designed to pressure global pharmaceutical companies into moving production facilities directly to the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that generic drugs imported into the US will remain dutyfree for a twoyear grace period starting August 1, 2026. However, duties will rise sharply to 100 percent in August 2028, before jumping to 200 percent from August 2029 onward for noncompliant manufacturers.

Trump Generic Drug Tariffs – Push to Reshore Pharmaceutical Production Into the US

Explicitly framing the aggressive tariff roadmap as a domestic industrial directive, the Trump administration stated that the policy aims to reshore generic pharmaceutical production into America” by imposing financial penalties on firms that fail to construct local plants and equipment. While existing tariff policies on patented, branded, and innovative drugs will remain unchanged, the new measures heavily target generic drugmakers, who currently supply over 90 percent of all prescriptions filled at US pharmacies.

Trump Generic Drug Tariffs – India’s “Pharmacy of the World” Model Faces Unprecedented Exposure

The tariff announcement poses a critical threat to India’s pharmaceutical sector, which supplies nearly 40 percent of all generic medicines consumed in the United States. Often referred to as the “pharmacy of the world,” India exported $9.7 billion worth of pharmaceuticals to the US in 2025 alone—accounting for roughly 38 percent of its total global drug exports. Industry experts warn that because generic manufacturers operate on notoriously thin profit margins, building low-cost manufacturing facilities inside the US within two years could prove economically unfeasible, threatening supply chains for essential life-saving treatments.

Trump Generic Drug Tariffs – Domestic Markets React as Indian Pharma Stocks Tumble

News of the impending import duties sent shockwaves through Indian financial markets, with the Nifty Pharma index sliding nearly 2 percent in early trading. Shares of major exporters—including Lupin, Aurobindo Pharma, Cipla, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, and Sun Pharma—faced heavy selling pressure as investors weighed potential revenue losses against the cost of setting up US operations. Trade analysts note that ongoing bilateral trade talks between New Delhi and Washington will now face intense pressure to negotiate exemptions or reduced rates before the initial two-year zero-duty period expires.
